Rose is an amateur poet. I have never been much good at poetry, apart from parody, but I am an amateur artist, and I have done a few things related to Rose Under Fire.
It took a long time to get around to it, because I feel that Rose deserves only the best I can give her, and I didn’t really have a clear picture of her in my head, the way I had pictures in my head of pretty much all the characters from Code Name Verity. The first thing I came up with was this little thing, doodled with a ballpoint pen on a scrap of paper on a boring car ride home from church one day:
But she didn’t look very Katharine Hepburn-ish in that, so I took another crack at it when a friend asked me to, and this was the result:
(This is when she was in the back of the truck sniffing her Hershey wrapper, and it is my favourite of all the ones on this page, no question. Oh, Rose. Sigh. <3)
If you know me at all, you know I am A LITTLE OBSESSED WITH JAMIE. So it should be no surprise that I HAD to do a wedding photo of Maddie and Jamie:
Which then led to somebody requesting THE wedding photo (the one Jack Justice mentions to Maddie, that has Rose in it), and after some time and a lot of complaining about EIGHT FREAKING GLASWEGIAN EVACUEES, this happened:
THERE ARE SO MANY THINGS WRONG WITH IT. First of all, Jock should be like 15, not still 12, and Rose doesn’t look right at ALL, and… yeah, basically I am all about the sky and not so much about the people in this one. But the person who asked for it claims to like it, so I guess that’s what counts? *shrug* I did have fun doing it, though, complaint-fest notwithstanding.
(Semi-related: My explanation for Lord Craigie not being in the picture is that he was TAKING the picture, which is a nice out for NOT HAVING TO TRY TO FIGURE OUT WHAT HE LOOKS LIKE.)
This is the second in a set of three drawings of Maddie-and-Rose in Paris:
(The first one isn’t done yet, because I haven’t decided which of two scenes I want it to be!)
And here’s number 3:
I’m contemplating adding a fourth one to this set, but considering I haven’t even gotten the first one done yet, WHO KNOWS.
And a shabby attempt at Irina (another ballpoint-pen-on-scrap-paper deal):
Feel free to shoot me ideas if you have something you’d like to see drawn! I can’t promise to fulfill every request, but I do love suggestions – they inspire me.
